Project Overview

Water and Pumps International Ltd implemented this project under the USAID BHA Uthabiti Activity to strengthen the resilience of refugee and host community farmers through the adoption of affordable, climate-smart irrigation technologies and digital market linkages.

 Project Achievements

✅ Empowered Farmers:
Trained 550 smallholder farmers, including women, youth, and persons with disabilities, on modern irrigation technologies, enabling year-round crop production and improved productivity.

Beneficiary farmers showcasing newly installed irrigation systems.

✅ Strengthened Local Capacity:
Trained and equipped 30 Community Agro-Input Agents (CAAs) to provide input access, technical support, and market linkage services across target communities.

✅ Demonstration Hubs Established:
Set up two demonstration hubs — in Palabek Refugee Settlement and Mbarara City — serving as knowledge-sharing and training centers for irrigation and agribusiness practices.

✅ Digital Integration:
Enhanced WPILs E-Commerce Agro-Input Trade Platform (EATPS) and Waterway maintenance platform, enabling farmers to connect with suppliers, SACCOs, banks, and off-takers digitally

Project Impact

The project improved food security, household incomes, and climate resilience among refugee and host community farmers. Through affordable irrigation systems and market integration, farmers now sustain agricultural production even during dry seasons, creating lasting community impact.
