Under the HortiMAP project, Water and Pumps International Ltd partnered with TechnoServe to promote the adoption of affordable small-scale irrigation technologies among smallholder farmers across the Elgon, Central, and Kigezi regions. The partnership aimed to enhance productivity, strengthen market linkages, and build local capacity to sustain irrigation systems and agricultural enterprises.
Key Achievements

Empowering farmers: WPIL trained and supported hundreds of smallholder farmers, including women and youth, to adopt climate-smart irrigation solutions, improving their yields and enabling year-round farming.
Demonstrated, handed over and trained SHF in Bukedea District,- WATERWAY SWS 50SP 30R – irrigation Kits
Building local capacity: Community Agro-Input Agents (CAAs) were trained and equipped to provide input access, after-sales services, and maintenance support within their communities.
Demonstration sites: Several demonstration gardens were established to showcase practical irrigation technologies and good agronomic practices.

Financial and supply linkages: WPIL strengthened collaboration with SACCOs, Equity Bank, and input suppliers to increase farmers’ access to financing and reliable agricultural inputs.

Sustainable service model: The community-based maintenance system ensured timely support, improved technology adoption, and long-term system performance.

Through this partnership, farmers in the target regions achieved improved productivity, increased income, and greater resilience to climate variability. The project strengthened local service delivery systems and created economic opportunities through trained agents and demonstration hubs, contributing to sustainable agricultural transformation.
